The label
Marks & Spencer began in 1884 as a penny bazaar stall run by Michael Marks in Leeds, with Thomas Spencer joining as partner a decade later to form the business the UK now knows simply as M&S. For most of the twentieth century its clothing carried the St Michael label, and that period established the reputation the brand still trades on: dependable quality, sensible fit and clothes bought to be worn for years rather than a season. Today M&S is one of Britain's most recognised retailers, headquartered in London, and remains a first stop for UK shoppers buying knitwear, shirting, tailoring, underwear and school uniform.
M&S clothing is organised around a core range plus a small set of clearly defined sub-brands. M&S Collection covers the everyday wardrobe essentials, Autograph sits at the premium end with fabrics such as Supima cotton, silk and cashmere, Per Una focuses on soft tailoring and print-led womenswear, and Goodmove covers activewear. Fabric quality is where the brand does most of its work: cotton-rich jersey, lambswool and merino knitwear, and in-house finishes including Stormwear™, a water-repellent treatment applied to macs, coats and some jeans, and Heatgen™, the brushed-back thermal fabric used across its base layers. Fit is treated as a practical problem rather than a styling one, which is why so much of the range comes in multiple leg lengths and body-shape options.
Buying M&S at Top Brand Outlet gives you those same wardrobe staples at outlet prices, which suits a brand people restock rather than experiment with. Most M&S shoppers already know their size in a lambswool jumper or a cotton-rich shirt, so the risk in buying is low and the case for buying two or three at once is strong. Our M&S women's clothing and men's clothing ranges cover the pieces that get worn hardest — knitwear, shirts, denim and outerwear — alongside kids' clothing for the school run. Availability depends on the lines we secure, so it's worth checking new arrivals if you're after a particular size or colourway.

Before you buy
The questions people ask before buying — answered here on the page rather than in a help centre.
They are M&S's own sub-brands, each aimed at a different part of the wardrobe rather than a different price tier alone. M&S Collection is the core everyday range, Autograph is the premium line built around finer fabrics like Supima cotton and cashmere, Per Una leans towards soft tailoring and print-led womenswear, and Goodmove covers activewear and leisure. The label on the garment tells you which range it came from, so it's a quick way to judge fabric quality and cut before you buy.
M&S uses UK sizing and is generally considered true to size, which is one reason it has such a loyal repeat customer base. The more useful detail is the fit options: much of the womenswear comes in Petite, Regular, Long and Curve, while menswear trousers and jackets are offered in short, regular and long. Check which fit variant a listing refers to before ordering, as it makes more difference to the finished look than the numerical size does.
Follow the care label first, then wash knitwear on a wool or delicate cycle at 30°C or below using a wool-safe detergent. Dry flat rather than hanging, since the weight of wet wool pulls jumpers out of shape, and fold knitwear for storage instead of putting it on a hanger. For garments with a Stormwear™ finish, avoid fabric conditioner — it can coat the fibres and reduce the water-repellent performance over time.
Build around one structured piece and keep the rest simple, which is exactly what the M&S range is designed for. A fine-gauge merino crew neck over a cotton-rich shirt with straight-leg jeans or chinos works for a relaxed office, while an Autograph knitted polo with tailored trousers handles dinner or a smarter weekend. Stick to navy, grey, camel and white as your base and let one piece — a printed Per Una blouse or a textured jumper — carry the interest.
