The label
H&M began in 1947 when Erling Persson opened a womenswear shop in Västerås, Sweden, called Hennes — Swedish for "hers". The name changed after Persson bought the Stockholm hunting retailer Mauritz Widforss in 1968, adding menswear to the range and creating Hennes & Mauritz. The brand reached the UK early: its first store outside Scandinavia opened in London in 1976, which is why H&M has been part of the British high street for the better part of fifty years. The design signature has stayed recognisably Scandinavian throughout — clean lines, wearable neutrals and a fast read on current trends.
H&M clothing is split across several ranges rather than sold as one catalogue, and knowing which is which tells you a lot about fabric and cut. The main collection covers everyday essentials, Divided skews younger and more trend-led, H&M Studio is the twice-yearly directional collection that has run since 2013, and Premium Selection groups the pieces made in cashmere, silk, linen and leather. Alongside those sits the guest designer programme H&M started with Karl Lagerfeld in 2004 and has continued with Versace, Balmain, Moschino, Simone Rocha, Mugler and Rabanne — limited runs that sell through quickly and hold their interest long after the season ends. Across the core range, expect cotton jersey, denim, viscose and wool blends, cut for a current silhouette rather than a classic one.
Buying H&M at Top Brand Outlet means paying outlet prices on a brand that already competes on price, which is where the value really compounds. H&M is a wardrobe-filler rather than an investment brand — T-shirts, jeans, dresses and layering pieces bought in twos and threes — so a lower unit price changes what you can put in the basket. Our H&M women's clothing and men's clothing ranges cover the everyday staples, with kids' clothing and jackets alongside. Stock depends on the lines we secure rather than a full seasonal range, so new arrivals is the page to watch if you're after a specific size.

Before you buy
The questions people ask before buying — answered here on the page rather than in a help centre.
They are separate ranges within H&M, each with its own fabric standard and design brief. Divided is the younger, more trend-led line, H&M Studio is the twice-yearly collection with a stronger fashion direction and better materials, and Premium Selection groups pieces made in cashmere, silk, linen and leather. The range name appears on the product listing, so it's a quick way to judge quality and cut before you buy.
H&M uses European sizing, and many shoppers find it comes up smaller than the equivalent UK size, particularly on fitted styles. The bigger issue is consistency: cuts differ between the main collection, Divided and Premium Selection, so the same nominal size can fit differently across two garments. Check the measurements listed on each product page and compare them against something you already own rather than assuming your usual size carries across.
They are limited-run capsule collections designed with outside fashion houses, produced in far smaller quantities than standard H&M lines. The programme began with Karl Lagerfeld in 2004 and has since included Stella McCartney, Versace, Balmain, Kenzo, Moschino, Simone Rocha, Mugler and Rabanne. These pieces typically use better fabrics and more distinctive construction than the core range, which is why they sell out fast and stay collectable.
Wash cotton jersey and viscose pieces inside out on a cool cycle at 30°C and skip the tumble dryer, which is what causes most of the shrinkage and misshaping people report. Air-dry jersey flat where you can, use a lower spin speed on viscose and lightweight woven fabrics, and wash new dark denim separately for the first few cycles. For knitwear and anything from Premium Selection, follow the care label closely and fold rather than hang.
